Ten Simple Things That Changed my Wardrobe

  • Monochrome. All white. All black. Doesn't matter. I think wearing all one color is not only easy but super chic. I love varying shades of one color as well, and I'm really loving head-to-toe creams and tans.

  • Black and Navy. I was told for some time that this was sort of a no-go; these two colors didn't mesh well. However, this is one such rule that I think was meant to be broken.

  • Layering. Especially different textures and shades. This works really well with those monochrome combinations.

  • The French Tuck. Or tucking in only a portion of your shirt. This captures a certain effortless, a certain nonchalance and gives an outfit a laid back feel.

  • Accessories. Statement gold earrings which look sort of sculptural. These are probably my current favorite accessory. These immediately elevate the simplest of white tee + jeans or white jeans + chunky knit combinations.

  • Using Inspiration. Thank god for Pinterest and Instagram. If I'm feeling in a rut, I just have to go to my saved images to get a new perspective on my closet. And even though I might not have the exact items which would allow me to copy an outfit, I don't think the point is to copy. I think the point is to steal--make the look your own, recreate it.

  • Trainers. I think trainers are a great way to balance out a look. If your outfit is dressier or leans a bit more toward the feminine, trainers can break up the uniformity or predictability of an outfit. I also think trainers are such a great way to add a bit of personality to an ensemble, and they also tend to be a very practical option if you spend a lot of time on your feet.

  • A Red Lip. On the other end of the spectrum, I think adding a red lip can dress up a relatively casual look or take a day time look to an evening one.

  • 5 Button Fly Jeans. This is just a small detail that I feel makes a difference and adds to the aesthetic and silhouette I prefer when I reach for a pair of jeans.

  • Ankle Length or Cropped Bottoms. For someone on the shorter side, I hate pants and jeans that cover my ankle or (even worse) bunch at the ankle as I feel they make me look shorter, therefore I always gravitate toward a cropped pant or pair of jeans.
