My RMS Beauty Review

Updated: Mar 14, 2019

I've been wearing RMS Beauty products religiously for the past six months (I'm wearing my typical full face of RMS products in these photos), so I thought it might be useful to share my thoughts on the brand.

For those unfamiliar with the line, all of the products are formulated with raw, food grade and organic ingredients in their natural state. They are made without harmful chemicals, synthetic preservatives, synthetic vitamins, and genetically modified ingredients (GMOs), etc. Additionally, in terms of sustainability, the packaging for RMS Beauty products is minimal and recyclable or reusable.

The Products I'm Wearing:

"Un" Cover-up in shade 00

Good Stuff: This concealer took a bit of getting used to at first just because of how sticky it is. I thought it might be better applied with the special brush RMS designed for it, but I find the product much easier to work with when applied with my fingers (which is honestly my favorite way to apply any makeup product). The color is slightly brightening for my skin tone, and I like the coverage, which to me is something in between Glossier's Stretch Concealer and Nars's Soft Matte Complete Concealer. Although, it is probably a bit closer to Glossier's. It does a great job toning down my redness and evening out the skin tone. This concealer is my go-to concealer everyday, and I really don't reach for those other two concealers anymore or find myself missing them.

On days when I want more coverage, I will layer this on with a foundation. I'm on the lookout for a natural foundation, so I've been using up my Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in the meantime.

Bad Stuff: I've found that this product works best with a very hydrated base, and given the fact that I personally struggle with dryness (especially in the winter) this tends to settle in and accentuate dry patches. Additionally, it does, at times, crease under the eyes, but I do feel like the days when it creases are the days I didn't bother to blend the product properly.

**Lastly, the foundation for all RMS Beauty products is coconut oil (this is more an observation for all of the products), and putting coconut oil on one's face is a controversial topic. I personally haven't found it to break me out (after the introduction of Lotion P50W by Biologique Recherche into my routine, that is), but I've been told that coconut oil does clog pores and can cause breakouts so I have, up until this point, avoided putting coconut oil on my face.

Contour Bronze

Good Stuff: I think this product was truly created to draw some attention to the natural shadows of the face mostly because of the cool-toned color. I find this very easy to use and blend, and I just apply it with my fingers.

Bad Stuff: When applying this product, I do tend to feel as though it rubs off the RMS "Un" Cover-up underneath it, but I don't feel as though I have this problem on the days when I also wear the Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. I'm also not too sure about the buildability of this product. I feel like it is quite light.

Buruti Bronzer

Good Stuff: I'm quite obsessed with this one, and you can tell because I've put the largest dent in this particular pot. I love the color, the pigment, and how easily it blends. This stuff really makes it look like I was out in the sun all day. It's very close to my natural tan. It's beautiful, and it adds some life back to the face.

Bad Stuff: Nothing.

Living Luminizer

Good Stuff: Again, this product is so natural looking and, for that reason, it is hands down my favorite highlighter I've ever bought. For that everyday lit-from-within-look, this highlighter is the best in my book.

Bad Stuff: Seriously nothing.

Lip2Cheek in Diabolique

Good Stuff: If you're like me and into the Glossier Generation G Lipsticks--the just blotted, lived-in sort of color that is definitely going to wear off in a couple of hours or less--than you will most likely love this stuff. I have a hard time committing to having color on my lips (and, most likely, having it end up on my teeth) all day, so this product is perfection. I do however like this product a bit better than Glossier's Generation G lipsticks because it seems to wear nicer and smoother without balling up in places (granted, I have not tried Generation G since it has been reformulated). It is also much more buildable and pigmented than Gen G.

Bad Stuff: This color in the pot looks more like a deep berry, definitely on the purple side. It actually looks pretty close to Generation G in Jam. However, as you can see in the photos, it goes on much more red than purple.

Eye Polish in Embrace

Good Stuff: I love the color of this product. It looks very fresh. Like all of the other products, it is easy to apply.

Bad Stuff: This creases terribly. That being said, I have not tried this product with a primer or powder under it. I'm not sure if either of those things would help with the creasing or not, but I wanted to love this product as is, without the fuss, without the need of other products to make it work.

To summarize...

Good Stuff: I adore this brand for its no nonsense approach to makeup, its commitment to good, quality, natural ingredients and sustainable packaging. The products are basic, minimal, effortless, glowy, and accentuate what you already have. In general, I'm gravitating towards the brands that challenge mainstream beauty ideals and the obsession with perfection and rather accept and celebrate flaws, imperfections, and humanness. Furthermore, the products don't require any brushes or any real skill to apply. All the products are easy to travel with because they are so compact. For the most part, the products met or exceeded my expectations. The eye polish was the only real disappointment out of the bunch.

Bad Stuff: Not all of the products are very pigmented, long lasting, or buildable. The coconut oil as the main ingredient could potentially cause breakouts. Some products are prone to creasing. Compact packaging also means less product.
